Player backlash has caused the developer of a highly anticipated zombie shooter to rethink how it treats solo players. Gamers who play by themselves matter too!

The situation

Left 4 Dead 2 is a zombie-shooter game so impactful within the gaming community that it's still played by tens of thousands - despite releasing more than 10 years ago. 

• Without an official sequel in sight, another studio decided to take a shot at revitalizing the zombie classic.
• The result is the upcoming Back 4 Blood, a game all about slaying hordes of zombies with a variety of weapons.

Early impressions of the game have been somewhat positive, however players have expressed disappointment regarding Back 4 Blood's current restrictions on solo play. 

• If a player decides to play by themselves, they will be unable to earn rewards and achievements that would regularly unlock when playing with friends (i.e. multiplayer) due to potential exploitation of how the game handles progression.
• The developer of the game has responded to the backlash by promising improvements after internally "discussing".

Boiling it down

20 years ago, gaming with other players over the Internet was an unfathomable concept. 

• Today, the normalcy of online multiplayer gaming has driven game developers' attention away from singleplayer games. 
• This industry-wide mindset may be misplaced as approx. 73.55% of gamers prefer singleplayer.

Given the developer's poor history with gamers, it's likely in their best interest to fully satisfy the concerns from fans. 

• Another public facing slipup may spell the complete distrust from gamers, potentially burying the studio.
