Still can’t get a new gaming console? Tesla has you covered (for $80k)

What’s being boiled down today?

What's the fuss?

Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and man of the people, tweeted a week prior asking people if they wanted the ability to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (a beloved, large scale role-playing game that initially released in 2015) in a Tesla vehicle. 85.4% of respondents said yes. Now, it appears you’ll actually be able to with the new line Tesla Model S.

The situation

The new model comes with an impressive 10 teraflop GPU (graphics processing unit) which would provide the car with enough power to, theoretically, run the latest games. In comparison, the new PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles sport 10.28 and 12 teraflops respectively, which allows them to run games at 4K with 60 frames per second (in other words, spectacular graphics with silky smooth movement).

The current Tesla models already have gaming capabilities, but no games on their current catalogue quite match the performance requirements of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Despite the fact that the game is considered a “last generation” game, the ability to play it with a car is very impressive.

Other new features include wireless controller support and an additional passenger display for a cool price tag of $80,000. At least scalpers shouldn’t be such a problem this time around.

Boiling it down

On-the-go gaming has been around since the 70s, but this is on a whole other level. Alongside the tempestuous rise of mobile gaming and the increasing capabilities of dedicated portable consoles such as the Nintendo Switch, its clear that we are getting to the point where higher fidelity gaming is possible outside of the home or arcade.

It’s no secret that Elon is a gamer at heart, which may have fueled some of the company’s gaming-centric decisions. Given his excellent taste in other role playing games, he must know how long these games take to beat (for instance, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt can take 100+ hours) and thus these types of games favor long play time periods. Unless Tesla drives are going on extremely long road trips, gamers may find playing video games using the car’s system more as a novelty.
