Original Splinter Cell remake is on the way

A remake of a 2002 classic is now formally in development. The publisher behind the iconic franchise really needs a win amidst a rocky year.

The action-stealth franchise Splinter Cell revolutionized the stealth genre in gaming.

Players control beloved protagonist agent Sam Fisher through levels that emphasize sneaking in darkness over straight-out combat to tackle threats.
Splinter Cell is widely considered one of Ubisoft's landmark franchises with 31+ million copies sold, however a new game in the series hasn't been released since 2013.

The self-titular first game in the series from 2002 looks to be getting the remake treatment, supposedly for the current generation of consoles.

The remake will be developed by Ubisoft's Toronto studio, who developed one of the series' most celebrated games.
Instead of only getting updated graphics like it did in 2011, the entire game will be built from the ground up using an updated engine used for modern Ubisoft games.

There's a distinct different between "remaster" and "remake".

A remaster, like the 2011 version of the game, is simply the graphical modernization of an older title to take advantage of today's hardware.
A remake, like the recently announced version of the game, not only includes upgraded graphics but an entire revitalization of gameplay mechanics that makes the remake almost feel like a new game entirely.

A remaster or remake of a beloved older title is usually a safe sales bet, and Ubisoft really needs one of those.

Not only has the massive developer/publisher been involved in numerous controversies as of late, but have also experienced inconsistent sales numbers so far in their fiscal year.
Because gamers almost know exactly what to expect with a remake, they almost always sell well as they directly cater to the nostalgia in all of us.
